Doernbecher Children’s Hospital

Portland, Oregon
Placemaking, Wayfinding, Donor Recognition

The program goal at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital was to create a welcoming environment and provide much needed wayfinding in this enormous facility where two-block long corridors with curved window walls and extended sight lines make wayfinding difficult. AK worked with ZGF Architects to develop themes and design icons to identify departments and services, placing them on all sign elements, from building directories to directional signs to room ID. Signs are attached to window mullions and suspended from ceilings when wall surfaces are missing. Doernbecher uses this icon system when scheduling appointments to help orient patients and their families through the building to their destinations.
