Salem Hospital Expansion
and Birth Center

Salem, Oregon
Placemaking, Wayfinding

As the population ages and technology advances, hospitals find themselves in the position of trying to expand complex organizations with minimal havoc. Salem Hospital planned ahead with a complete program of temporary signs, followed by final installation four years later coincident with the completion of a new hospital tower. On-going joint collaboration yielded signs to illuminate and direct wayfinding paths both for the short and long term. Inside the Birth Center, Anderson Krygier developed a theming program using foliage, flowers and water images to clearly identify individual floors and functional areas. Floor icons placed on frosted glass door panels relate to architectural trim and hardware details.
