Museum Place and Safeway

Portland, Oregon
Placemaking, Wayfinding

Inspired by its location in Portland’s West End Cultural District, Anderson Krygier developed a bold identity for the new Museum Place Lofts & Townhouses. Our charge was to create an upbeat, contemporary identity for the housing portion of the project and an urban interpretation of Safeway’s identity signage on the ground level. Calling on her calligraphy skills, Elizabeth Anderson hand-lettered the artful Museum Place logo applied to metal canopies above the housing entries. AK worked closely with Safeway representatives to apply the signature red letters to a curved wire mesh marquee bisected by a vertical fin capturing the “S” logo mark. The surfaces of these structures provide visual form by day, transparency by night, and “extend” the building surface to the street corners.
